Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family

By Robert Kolker

Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family is a non-fiction account of the trials and tribulations of the Galvin’s- an all-American family where 6 out of the 12 children were diagnosed with schizophrenia.  Their experiences weave a fascinating, disturbing, and heartbreaking tale all at once.

Given the disproportionate number of children in the family diagnosed with schizophrenia, the Galvin family willingly shared their DNA samples and became one of the first families to be studied by the National Institute of Mental Health.  While neither the exact source of the neurological disease nor a cure has yet been discovered, the Galvin family has been integral to scientists researching the genetic origins of the neurological disease.  The Galvin family’s DNA has provided a genetic treasure-trove on the disease which will lead to monumental discoveries in the 21st century.
