Book Review: Shadow of Night (Book 2 in the All Souls Trilogy) by Deborah Harkness

Shadow of Night

Shadow of Night is the second book in the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. Shadow of Night picks up where A Discovery of Witches leaves off and follows Diana Bishop, a Yale professor and reluctant witch, and Matthew Clairmont, a geneticist and centuries old vampire, as their forbidden connection deepens and they travel through time to Elizabethan England. In the past, Matthew picks up his old life as a member of the mysterious School of Night, a group of poets and scientists which counted Sir Walter Raleigh and Christopher Marlowe as members. Diana is in the past to hone her craft which she had all but abandoned, in order to face the menacing forces waiting for her in the present.

In 2018, the initial book in the trilogy was adapted by Britain’s Sky One into an 8 part series starring Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode.

Americans can watch Season one of A Discovery of Witches on Amazon Prime Video, Sundance, and other channels. Check your cable provider for more information.

Sky One renewed A Discovery of Witches for a second and third series. Shadow of Night has been adapted into the second series premiering in early 2021. Check your cable listings.

So whether you want to escape the winter doldrums with a book or with your television, the All Souls Trilogy will help you achieve your desires.
