Don’t Let Your Fridge Get Caught With Its Pants Down: Simple Fridge Organization Ideas

Spring is here!  You know what that means….?

You guessed it, SPRING CLEANING!

Can your fridge pass the sniff test? When you open your fridge, can you find what you are looking for before the energy saver alarm begins to chirp? Can you honestly hold your head up high if a guest opens your fridge? This goal is attainable with some initial elbow grease and a few organizational tools.

It just so happens that my fridge went caput a few days ago!  Without much fanfare or warning. Tuesday we were good, on Wednesday the freezer wasn’t frozen, and by Thursday the fridge wasn’t cold.  In calling my trusty appliance repairman, he informed me that I could pay him to come out and fix the issue, which would cost hundreds of dollars, or I could buy a new fridge.  I have used these repairmen for other appliance repairs; they are honest and straightforward.  Moreover, they are in the business of repair and not sales, so I trusted their recommendation to invest in a new fridge made by a different manufacturer.

By Friday, deliverymen were at my front door to deliver my new fridge and haul away the old one.  As they were doing so, they opened the old fridge and freezer to ensure I had not left anything inside.  One of the deliverymen commented on how clean my fridge was.  He thought that I had just cleaned it.  I will admit that my OCD personality was tempted to clean the old fridge before I handed it over, but I decided against it given my time restraints.

I use food bins and other fridge organization tools to catch crumbs and spills. These bins can be easily cleaned, letting you hold your head up high in the event someone needs to go in your fridge (invited or not). Just like your mama told you to always wear clean underwear in the event you get hit by a car, don’t air your dirty laundry with your kitchen appliances. Always have a fresh smelling and clean looking fridge.

In honor of Spring Cleaning (and my new fridge), I thought that I would share with you my tried and true fridge must haves. I have even given some of these items to others as gifts.  (Yes, that’s just the kind of friend I am).

You may be asking yourself whether fridge organizers are necessary.  My answer is no- but neither are bras, and most of you don’t leave home without one.  Once you have a clean, organized fridge, you will thank me.

Happy Spring!

P.S. A great all purpose cleaner for the inside of the fridge is a distilled white vinegar solution.  Use an empty spray bottle and fill it up 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water.  Now you have a food safe and natural cleaner.
