My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry

By Fredrik Backman

Elsa is 7 years old and is wise beyond her years.  She is different and doesn’t seem to fit in.  Elsa doesn’t know where she belongs.  Elsa’s parents are divorced; her mother is remarried and pregnant.  But that’s ok.  Her best friend is her grandmother- a no-nonsense, strong woman, her superhero, who has lived life and makes no apologies.  That is until she is dying from cancer.

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman follows Elsa on her journey delivering letters to neighbors who have known and loved her grandmother, after her grandmother’s death. Elsa’s grandmother has also unintentionally hurt these neighbors and friends. In Elsa’s mind, the expedition is an extension of her grandmother’s fairytale world.  In the apartment building where Elsa and her grandmother live, Elsa delivers the letters to their neighbors, who have secrets and darkness all their own.  Elsa makes a game out of the hunt, living in the fairytale world her grandmother created to explain life as only a child could understand.  In delivering the letters, the life of Elsa’s grandmother unfolds exposing regrets and pain and helping to heal wounds that have been left to fester for too long.  Elsa also begins to understand the reality of the fairytale and begins to learn who her grandmother really was.  Every superhero has a dark side.  And exposing it only makes you love them more.
